RE: champ motor

Howard, good luck that's a very narrow belt, will be watching this winter how your drive system is working. See you in Beausejour for the December race.

RE: champ motor

Howard, how wide is the poly belt your going to run on your champ sled?

RE: champ motor

We used a gates polychain belt on our champ sled a couple of years ago. Works very well, except in the very rough and we all know it gets rough in the Sunday finals. When your track free wheels because its off the ground and then hits tends to blow the belt. After while your driver gets gun shy as it tends to throw you over the bars when the belt brakes. Wouldn't see me going back to this set up again.

Question on Ironwood OvaL Race

Talked to someone from that area today, and they said there won't be a oval race this winter at that location. Anyone from the USSA, know if that's for sure? Would have been nice to have a race there as it's before Eagle River.

RE: Congratulations Jacques!

Congratulations Jacques on your recent award, looking forward to seeing you this coming winter. Your a living legend in the field of motor-sports, you've raced boats, cars, and snowmobiles and taken many checkered flags over the years. Hope you have a great year racing this coming winter, any chance you'll make the trip out to Beausejour in December?

RE: champ sleds

Does anyone really know if Garth is willing to come back and tune an oval sled? Last I heard he was still helping the Boss Snowcross team out of Wpg. If he's ready to come back I may have a job for him this winter!!

RE: Jerry How About a low down on ISR Rules Meeting

Jerry thanks for the update on the rules meeting. Have to agree with Mike to, many of you put in lots of time for the sport of ice sprint racing with out much financial rewards. Thanks again and have a great summer taking in the car races each weekend.

Jerry How About a low down on ISR Rules Meeting

Jerry, can you let us in on what happened at the meeting? I'm always interested in what was discussed and maybe voted on next year too. All I've heard is no radio communication between driver and crew next year in sprint racing and a few changes with formula 500 based sleds in some classes. Thanks Greg

RE: Everyone's Thoughts on Class Proposals 2011 and Beyond

This is just a guess on my part, I look for nothing to change in stock class for next season after the rule's meeting this weekend. On the other hand I look for at least three less sleds in Stock 600 class next year in Eagle River, and that was the only race that had more than three or four sleds last year. Doesn't look like very healthy numbers to me. By no means do I have an answer for a cure all, but on the other hand what we're doing now isn't working. Three years ago I lobbied hard to Jerry to keep the rules the way they are now, looking back I think I was wrong. The way it is now, your not going to see any growth at all in numbers. Look back four or five years, Wally always had a full field in the Junior stock classes, even more in the Sport stock classes and he ran four classes each weekend in sport stock. These classes are all but done now. Where are the new numbers going to come from if we don't change? Some people won't like the comments I just made, but I believe they needed to be said. Remember to we only have two manufactures racing stock class in the Mid-West on ice ovals. My gut feeling is if nothing is done we'll have two new classes. Pro Champ Lite and Semi-Pro champ Light, they both will have stock engine with pipes and a champ frame. Then we'll have four champ classes, do you think race fans will be less confused with this? I think everyone better let their racing association know what they want, before next weekend. If stock numbers don't turn around, stock as we know it will be gone. Greg Peterson

RE: Everyone's Thoughts on Class Proposals 2011 and Beyond

Jerry, your correct when you say it will cost more for the ones that would want to go to the two carbide per ski request. I can't argue that. I can't speak for the Wahls and Moyles, but they most likely would try the set up I'm asking to be allowed. On the other hand so could anyone else. The benefit to this rule is it removes all the dartiness from the sled, helps entering corner, and exiting the corner. Cornering speeds may increase slightly, but it would be minimal. I guess it could only be allowed in champ class if you wanted, your correct I do like to keep the costs down as I consider us a low budget team. After being involved in this class, I can safely tell you no one is going to beat the Wahls, Moyles, or say #96 on a regular basis no matter what the rules are. Yes this is coming from a low budget team, my goal for next season is to become say sort of a giant killer once in a while. I already know I don't have the funds and know how to do it on a regular basis. I can live with that, I can honestly say I don't think anyone is having more fun and enjoyment than myself doing this during the winter months by racing in the Elite Class. Jerry have you noticed all the different changes Jacques trys on his ski's and carbide set-ups. Every time he goes out in staging or comes off the track I always give his set up a look. Believe me, he's got a few different set-ups and some of the things he tries sure looks like they work for him, but I think most fellows would never even give his a try. To me theres most likely no one, that knows more about a snowmobile than #96 at this time, and it shows who else at age 54 can compete with a bunch of twenty year olds or in some cases even younger fellows than that. In closing I'm just asking for it to be brought up again, if nothing becomes of it thats fine. Thanks

RE: Everyone's Thoughts on Class Proposals 2011 and Beyond

Jerry, a couple of years ago I asked to have a new rule change, the change was to allow two carbides on each ski if the racer wanted to go that way. At that time it was proposed to allow MIRA to try this in their circuit. I didn't really here any feed back on the proposal last year at the rules meeting. I guess I'm asking to have it proposed again, and would like to know why it is a problem? I don't think it would be any more dangerous, as a safety aspect, and I have reasons to believe it would work quite well and help out champ drivers in a few ways. I guess all I'm asking for is to allow it, for anyone that wants to try. It does require a different ski than what is available now, but won't be a problem if the rule passes. Greg Peterson

RE: Everyone's Thoughts on Class Proposals 2011 and Beyond

Chris I think what they are proposing for stock is not anything older than three years from production. So there won't be any ZR'S, MXZ'S, or PRO-X'S. They need to make sure it's off the show room floor, anyone can buy one, not some limited snow-cross or cross country sled that has limited builds. Doug I agree the sooner the better for the switch in stock, but the only thing is the EPT has a good following of stockers now and it will be hard to convince them to make the switch. It has to be the same everywhere or it just won't work, and it won't be easy with everyone on board either. All sanctioning bodies will have to agree that there are no specialty classes, and no exceptions to the rule. When you run specialty classes you just add racers, but they don't make the trip out to other sanctioning body's events. Make a place for everyone, but make sure they can race there sled everywhere too. One thing for sure is Ovals have survived through some tough times, we'll see if other venues can to when things turn in a different direction. I think it's about time for ovals to have there day, lets all work together to make it happen.

RE: Not ovals but...

Chris, you maybe correct that someone will step up and start another national circuit. If they do tho they'll have way less support from the manufactures and some of the larger teams that were in the Pro National circuit. I know for sure people in the marketing end for the manufactures are saying they really didn't get a full return on dollars spent the last few years. A recreation market always suffers when there needs to be some belt tightning in this country. Good Luck to you next year, and don't make dad work every weekend on your sled either!!

RE: Not ovals but...

Chris, that is correct and it was announced today. It's really to bad, but could really help ovals out some if everything falls into place. The manufactures are making so many less units, compared to ten years ago, the money just isn't their to dish out. Are you working on a new sled for next year yet?

RE: Everyone's Thoughts on Class Proposals 2011 and Beyond

Philip, thanks for your input on the new class structure for Formula 600, I can honestly say we're thinking in totally different directions. I'm more than willing to listen to all the ideas anyone has, because I've been wrong before and more than willing to admit it. One thing that would really interest me, is Marcel's take on this matter. I once heard he didn't even like the thought of stock 600's with pipes for a class to replace Champ 440. This is purely here say on my part, as by no means did I ever here him say this. I've only met Marcel once and that was a couple of years ago in Beausejour, but I respect the fellow for what he has done for ovals over the years. Seems like a stand up fellow, and I'd like to hear his thoughts on this topic. If your really bored Phil, your always welcome to help me with some clutching and chassis handling issues!! Have a new Wahl chassis and it looks between scary fast and wicked fast, with your help we could make sure it's wicked fast!!

RE: Everyone's Thoughts on Class Proposals 2011 and Beyond

Chuck thanks for the clarification, I like that way better than a stock engine. On another note, Jerry and I won't butt heads in tech if thats the case. Or at least I hope not!! Thanks for having the meeting in Eagle River to.

RE: Everyone's Thoughts on Class Proposals 2011 and Beyond

Jerry it's on the very last page of the proposals at the Eagle River Meeting. It is what is proposed when Formula 600 takes over for Champ 440 as the elite class in oval racing. It was mentioned it maybe would make running in that class cheaper for the racer. I tend to dis-agree, anyone with a dyno will be using it to a greater degree than now, instead of having two or three sets of pipes in the shop we'll have closer to 12 or fifteen sets if you really want to run with the big boys up front. If the big blue team jumps into this class, which is hoped for in the future to bring all four manufactures on board. Picture this, you and I in the tech shack in Eagle River, you just took a cylinder and head off the top of my sled to see if I was cheating. Than the fellow with the four stroker goes out the door, without getting tore down. Rest assured NO one else will want to be in the tech shack, my fuse is very short and by now it's sizzling and your about to get a earfull. My proposal when champ 440 isn't the elite class, is to have mod 600 engines , with pipes, and if speeds are to high we can always restrict them in some way. Another option is everyone still makes a 500 engine except Yamaha and we could use that engine for the class. With 34mm round slides the difference in the speeds we have now would be minimal. Everyone's Thoughts on Class Proposals 2011 and Beyond

First off even if you do differ, lets try not to make this into a slug fest. The point is to make things better and go in the correct direction to build oval ice racing in the future. Formula 600 Class 2011 and Beyond Stock 600cc motor with set of pipes This is just my opinion, I don't really like to see the elite oval class go to a stock engine. Reason number one is the teams close to the manufactures will have a better stock engine than say a team without factory involment and really give some of the elite teams a bigger advantage than they have now. Reason number two the extra time it will take in tech, thirty sleds going through tech in Eagle River all taking a cylinder and head off doesn't appeal much to me. Remember it's only my opinion, but I'm interested in what everyone else thinks and really what everyone else has to say about other class changes too!! Post your thoughts and why you lean in that direction. Greg Peterson

RE: Eagle River Meeting Proposals

Mike I agree with you about the slower speeds, but may make for closer racing and it will be way cheaper for the stock racers. Three or four pro stock teams were at the Eagle River meeting and it seemed they all thought the new stock rules would be better for the sport and manufacture participation. The idea was to have a stock sled off the show room floor, not one built for snow cross teams as which is used now.

RE: FSN

I believe Wally said all the races would be on at 9:00 Sunday mornings on FSN. He also said they would all be re-played in late fall before next season's races. For anyone that wants you can buy a DVD with all of the action from all the races on the pro-ice site. Goes for the hill cross events, each venue has a tape of its own.
